In 1997, the government declared Punta Rio Claro National Wildlife a Refuge, to better protect the rainforests and beaches in the Drake Bay area of the Osa Península of Costa Rica. This officialisation was made possible by the efforts of the owners of the place, a Costa Rican family who protected the area for more than 30 years.
The Refuge encompasses 300 hectares of tropical rainforests, with miles of pristine beaches, making it one of the most important natural preserves in Costa Rica. The Refuge is a botanist dream with trees towering over 140 feet and supporting hundreds of species of ferns, bromeliads and orchids, combined with palm swamps and mangroves.

Punta Río Claro Wildlife Refuge is a home to more than 350 species of birds, 150 species of mammals, 80 species of reptiles, 60 species of amphibians, and many others that are about to be discovered. The Refuge also makes conservation efforts to safeguard keystone species like pumas and endangered tapirs.

Vision
Our vision is to rally support for long-term, sustainable strategies aiming at preserving and conserving the forest.
The objective is to protect species in danger of extinction, such as the Scarlet Macaw, Squirrel Monkey, Howler Monkey, Tapirs and Pumas.
We aimed to raise awareness around the importance of preserving the forest and its inhabitants.
Lodge
The family who created the sanctuary decided several years ago to open a small lodge: the Punta Marenco Lodge.

With its beachfront private Bungalows built in harmony with its surrounding, the lodge has the ambition to share the secrets and beauty of the primary rainforest of Corcovado National Park and the surrounding area.

We want to provide to customers all the knowledge around animals, wildlife and forest preservation.
